GitLab: The Enterprise Powerhouse

You can spin it up in a Docker container in minutes, and suddenly you’ve got your own mini GitHub clone running locally. That’s why indie hackers and small teams love it. You don’t need a DevOps department to keep it alive.

The interface feels familiar, repos, issues, pull requests, all the basics are there. It doesn't overwhelm you with enterprise features, and that's exactly the point. Gitea aims to be small, fast, and simple. That makes it great for internal tools, personal projects, or small startup teams who don't want their workflow locked into a giant cloud provider.

Since Gitea 1.19, the platform also includes Gitea Actions, a built-in CI/CD system that's compatible with GitHub Actions workflows. That means if you've already got GitHub Actions YAML files, you can often reuse them with minimal changes. It's a meaningful upgrade that turns Gitea from a simple code host into a more complete development platform.

Fedora uses Gitea internally for some of its infrastructure, and lots of small startups rely on it for keeping private code in-house without paying GitHub or GitLab for enterprise licenses. The community behind Gitea is also pretty passionate, which means features evolve quickly. It's also worth knowing that Forgejo, covered below, is a community-driven fork of Gitea.


Codeberg: Community Over Corporations

Codeberg is what happens when a bunch of developers decide that hosting code shouldn't be controlled by big tech at all. It's a nonprofit, community-owned platform powered by Forgejo (it originally ran on Gitea, but migrated to its community fork). That means you get the same lightweight experience, but hosted for you, and with a philosophy that's all about independence and openness.

There are no investors, no ads, no corporate roadmaps. Codeberg is run by a foundation (Codeberg e.V.), supported by donations, and focused on being a safe home for open source projects. That makes it appealing if you like Forgejo or Gitea but don't want to self-host. It's also a natural choice if you want your project to live in a place that feels more grassroots and less commercial.

It’s become a home for smaller OSS communities, nonprofits, and developers who care deeply about privacy. The scale is nowhere near GitHub, but the vibe is very different. For some projects, that’s the whole point.


Forgejo: The Community Fork of Gitea

Forgejo was born in 2022 when concerns about Gitea's governance led a group of contributors to fork the project under the umbrella of Codeberg e.V., a nonprofit organization. The result is a self-hosted Git platform that looks and feels a lot like Gitea, but with a governance model that guarantees it will always remain community-controlled and 100% free software.

What makes Forgejo interesting beyond the governance story is how quickly it's been shipping features. Forgejo v14.0, released in January 2026, added inline search filters for issues and pull requests, replaced the old Monaco web editor with the lighter CodeMirror, and continued making more of the UI functional without JavaScript. On the CI/CD side, Forgejo Actions keeps expanding with concurrency groups, dynamic matrix support, and finer-grained trust controls for pull request workflows.

Forgejo Actions is compatible with GitHub Actions, so if you already have workflow YAML files from GitHub, they'll largely work as-is. That lowers the migration barrier significantly. Codeberg itself runs on Forgejo, which makes it a nicely battle-tested platform even though it's younger than Gitea.


Radicle: Peer-to-Peer and Decentralized

Radicle takes a fundamentally different approach to code collaboration. Instead of hosting your repos on someone else's server, Radicle is peer-to-peer and local-first. There's no central server, no single organization controlling the network. Repositories are replicated across peers in a decentralized manner, and you're in full control of your data and workflow at all times.

Everything in Radicle is built on top of Git and signed using public-key cryptography, so authenticity and authorship are verified automatically. Social artifacts like issues and code reviews are stored as Git objects through what Radicle calls Collaborative Objects (COBs), which means the entire project history, discussions included, lives in Git.

Radicle is still a niche choice compared to the platforms above, and it currently works on Linux, macOS, and BSD only. But for developers and teams who care deeply about sovereignty, censorship resistance, and not depending on any third party, it's the most principled option on this list. The project ships a CLI, a web interface, and a desktop client, so there are multiple ways to interact with it.


AI and Code Assistance: A New Factor

In 2026, AI-powered code assistance has become a real differentiator when choosing a platform. GitHub Copilot is the obvious frontrunner here, deeply integrated into VS Code and JetBrains, and backed by OpenAI's models. If AI-assisted coding is a big part of your workflow, GitHub's ecosystem is hard to beat.

But it's not the only option anymore. GitLab Duo brings AI features directly into the GitLab platform, covering code suggestions, merge request summaries, vulnerability explanations, and more. For teams already on GitLab, Duo means you don't need to bolt on a separate AI tool.

The self-hosted platforms like Gitea, Forgejo, and Radicle don't come with built-in AI features, but they're not locked out either. You can integrate third-party tools or run local models alongside them. If you're privacy-conscious and want AI on your own terms, self-hosting gives you that flexibility. It's worth thinking about what level of AI integration matters to your team when picking a platform.

  • Azure Repos: If you're already deep into the Microsoft ecosystem, Azure Repos makes sense. It plugs right into Azure DevOps and works well for enterprise workflows. Microsoft itself uses it internally.
  • AWS CodeCommit: Amazon's Git hosting service. It integrates with AWS IAM for access control, which is convenient if your infrastructure is already AWS-heavy. Worth noting that AWS stopped accepting new CodeCommit customers in mid-2024, so it's effectively in maintenance mode. Existing users can keep using it, but it's not a platform to bet on for new projects.
  • Phorge: The community fork of Phabricator, which was sunset a while ago. Phorge keeps the spirit alive for teams that still rely on those tools. It’s niche, but if you’re coming from that world, it’s worth checking out.
